Dr Michael Olenska Speech

On Wednesday, February 14, Dr. Michael Oleksa from the Orthodox Diocese of Anchorage, Alaska came to speak at our school. It was a wonderful pleasure having him here and hopefully in the future he will come again. The title of his talk was “For God So Loved the World: Ecological Concerns and the Orthodox Church in Alaska.” In the beginning, Oleksa stated when we think of the world what do we think of. Normally we think of the world being a place with human beings. But Oleska said it was a place of creation and not just human beings. If you think about it, it's true. The world and every single thing was created. Animals, the street, buildings, trees, sidewalks, grass, dirt, and bugs are all creations. Dr. Oleska expanded on the creations …show more content…
But he gave us the top two. The first one was to talk about animals in a respectful manner. I find this step to be interesting because many children are fascinated with animals in many ways. Some look at animals in awe and praise. While some look at animals as weird or funny looking. But fail to see they were created just like us. The second step was that any item or weapon used against an animal must be beautiful. When I heard this step, I had began to picture many weapons and items used to kill animals. First, I pictured a butchered knife because this knife is used to carve animals and split them open. Second, I pictured a shotgun because in movies you would see these long shot guns being aimed to kill animals.
Dr. Oleska mentioned that humans and animals have the same life and that animals has to be treated with humility, gratitude, and respect because they keep us alive. I believe with this statement 100 percent. Without animals how will humans survive. I think all humans would have to be eating grass, trees and drinking water our whole lives without animals to eat. I think we should appreciate animals much more because they give us nutrients to live and fur for warmth. Animals are doing what God is doing. Oleska stated it was a pattern that they already

The Contrast Between Animality and Humanity in The Island of Doctor Moreau and Life of Pi One of the major cultural anxieties that prevails in society is the relationship between humans and animals and the distinction between humanity and animality. Humans are often depicted as being a higher form of animal, most commonly induced by religious practices. However, upon isolation or fear of death, the human thought process tends to revert to what is associated to animal-like behaviour. Humans tend to separate themselves from animal life forms as animals are seen as vicious, brutish and capable of committing acts that humans refrain from. Because of this cultural anxiety, much of literature embodies the ideology of animality and humanity and the…

In All Animals Are Equal, the philosopher Peter Singer argues that we should extend the basic principle of equality to non-human animals. In order to justify this claim, the author examines the foundations of the basic principle of equality, establishing a moral system that takes into account the equal consideration of interests of living beings. Peter Singer states that in order for a being to have interests at all, one must take into account the capacity of suffering and enjoyment, or in other words, sentience. Throughout this chapter, Singer makes his readers see that if one rejects racism and sexism, one must also reject the idea of giving special consideration to the interests of one species over another one. In this essay, I will firstly reconstruct the arguments used by Singer to arrive at the conclusion that all animals are equal.…

In Gary Steiner’s column, “Animal, Vegetable, Miserable”, he attempts to open up the reader’s eyes on how he believes animals should be treated and how modern day culture should review the use of animals in everyday practices. In regards to Steiner’s column, many readers wrote whether they agreed, qualified, or disagreed based on their opinions of Steiner’s…

Christians have formed these interactions to form relationships with creation.
