In the textbook, it is explained that men perform their masculine role in front of their peers, fathers and they are ridiculed if they don’t play the part right (Mandell, Johnson 2017). Throughout the chapter we are constantly reminded that they’re differences of performance for different social class race and disability. For the low class, it is conveyed that countless of them are expected to skip school among themselves and if they attend they would be made fun of because the idea is that their situation won’t get any better (Mandell, Johnson 2017). For race, we are shown by Carl E. James that black masculinity as performance is different than white masculinity. They consist of being over sexualized, to be strong, great at sports, and want to become famous (Mandell, Johnson 2017). We are told that this performance progresses by teachers and parents. And the performance for disabilities is shown to be a bit more complicated. With three different types of masculinity, Reformulation which men define their masculinity through their own ideals, Reliance where men feel weak and try to compensate for that and Rejection where they just reject the idea of masculinity entirety (Mandell, Johnson 2017).
