Internal Conflict In Fahrenheit 451

Muse upon all your held convictions of freedom and the pleasures you possess. Now contemplate the possibility that there are greater pleasures in life that go beyond what you have been inculcated for the duration of your life. Now place yourself in the opposite position and imagine being raised to despise the pleasures you consider normal. The latter is precisely the position in which the characters of Fahrenheit 451 find themselves. Guy Montag, the main protagonist, is a man in this dystopian world who holds the ironic position of a “fireman”: which is an occupation that instead of quenching fires, entails burning literary material that the powers that be determine to be nonconforming to the societal norm. However, Guy Montag begins to question the status quo, and delves into the forbidden fruit of literature. One can relate to certain characters or to the struggles of a certain character. One personal example is the great amount of internal conflict within Guy Montag as he gradually becomes more seditious. He and his associate Faber exhibit a large amount of craven emotion before undergoing their illicit activities and after they become fugitives, as they know that being caught may lead to their demise. A direct example of this expression is found in the following quote, where Faber references his desire to remain in the safety of his home while Guy does the fieldwork, “If the drones die, I’m still safe at home, tending my fright with a maximum of comfort with a minimum of chance. See how safe I play it, how contemptible I am?” (Bradbury 91).
