In Ernest J. Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying a moment in which we see character development is after the court decision, which was the decision of execution for Jefferson. In page 14, it states, “and where do you think you’re going? Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying a moment in which we see person vs self is when Grant visits Jefferson in the day room and, Grant gives Jefferson a speech about why Emma is super persistent with Grant visiting him, after Grant decides to willingly help now in page 192 “I've always done what they wanted me to do, teaching, writing and arithmetic. and went along and always hated myself for doing so.” The quote shows conflict of person vs. self. Grant isn't satisfied with his job because it is not what he wanted to do. In page 191 Grant says, “I teach because it was the only thing an educated black man can do in the South today.” Grant realizes he can help change it so he turns it into something useful. This is shown when Grant says, “went along and always hated myself for doing so.” Grant doesn't like his job, but he is still doing it. He doesn't like to be a teacher because he was always told what to do and went along even if he didn't agree because the whites were superior. This shows my theme because Grant is showing commitment by giving an education to black
