Hemingway’s style in A Farewell to Arms is effective because it gives the reader a realistic image. First of all, Hemingway writes the book from the perspective of the narrator reflecting upon his past. He gives the reader the feeling that they are actually reliving the memories. Second, the narrator has no reason to give the unseen reader his physical description, background, or such details. The omitting of details from the writing makes it seem more realistic and puts the reader in the immediate picture. Lastly, Hemingway’s writing style has straightforward sentences with the heavy use of nouns and verbs as opposed to adjectives and adverbs. For example, the quote, “Then the truck stopped. The whole column was stopped. It started again and we went a little farther, then stopped. The mountains, the plain, and the rain have symbolic significance in A Farewell to Arms. For example, the mountains represent home. They are a source of a feeling of happiness and security. Next, the plains are like the opposite of the mountains and represent the lowlights of war. It symbolizes obscenities, pain, and suffering. Lastly, the quote said by Catherine, “I’m afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it… And sometimes I see you dead in it” (Hemingway 126), shows how rain symbolizes death in the book.
