Sustainability is the quality of not being harmful to the environment and therefore, trying to preserve the ecological resources in this world for a longer period of time. In Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, Callenbach writes about a sustainable community in the United States of America called Ecotopia. The states of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington have all succeeded from the USA to form this new vision of the future. After twenty years since its independence of the United States, Willam Weston, who is a journalist, has been chosen by the Times-Post to travel to Ecotopia and write about the way of life of the Ecotopians that amazes the Americans of their survival since its independence. People have sex with anyone they want. There are no relationships in Ecotopia to an extent. Men and women alternate have sexual freedom. For example, if you sex with Maria today, you will be having sex with another girl called Sarah tomorrow. The culture of the Ecotopian society further allows this to happen. Weston finds himself also doing this. He begins to fall in love with an Ecotopian women, and feels really bad after he finds out that she had sex with another man a part from him. Despite of the sexual freedom in Ecotopia, the country is not over populated. The society in Ecotopia is engraved with ideology that “additional children, in a highly advanced industrial society, could be more of a burden than an advantage to a family – the reverse of the situation in agricultural or less advanced societies” (61). America has a population of 325.36 million people while Asian countries such China and India have a population that 1 billion plus. According to study, India is about to overtake the spot of the most populated country in the globe. Because of the sexual freedom in Ecotopia, one would assume the population to be overpopulated. However, it is not. I believe the population is in control because health education that would I believe the schools and universities teach. Therefore, men and women are able to practice safe sexual intercourse and prevent the possibility of having a child when one has planned it. Countries such as China and India do no spend a priority on teaching each individual of sex. People in those countries usually have to find it on their own. Asian parents I believe from personal experience do not teach a child of sex. They often assume that child does not know about and he was eventually find out when he or she gets married or soon before it. People in these Asian countries look down upon having sexual intercourse before marriage. Therefore when one has sex when getting married, they usually don’t plan and because of their lack of knowledge of sexual intercourse they usually get the women pregnant. Also, these Asian countries are overpopulated because of the lack of opportunies that women get. They usually are expected to stay at home.
