Intertwining with the previous chapter and analysis, Epic of American Civilization: Anglo-America (panel 15) by Jose Clemente Orozco, the visual elements (line, shape, mass, light, value, color, texture, space, and possibly time and motion) must be organized in such a way as to satisfy the artists expressive intent. For a clear definition, unity can be described as the sense of oneness, of things, belong together and makes a coherent whole; variety is the differences that provide interests and contrasts. Of course there can be paintings with only one or the other, but usually paintings are more popular and satisfying if they display both qualities. This painting provides both; looking at this painting there is the same paint quality of the opaqueness of the white dresses on the children in the front and the woman in the back of the painting. Also it seems like the painting is monochromatic displaying multiple tints and shades of blue, besides a couple spots of color which really displays some variety. Every work of art usually has an emphasis or focal point to their piece, the main thing they want you to notice. Subordination is everything else, the background and filler space of the piece. With subordination, usually the background is less detailed, blurry, and displayed in cooler colors so that you will notice and focus only on the emphasis. Subordination also contributes to the unity, because without background the painting would not be a whole. Looking at this piece, there are a couple of reasons why the children and the adult in blue are the emphasis. For one, there is a light shining on the group, with many of them facing us and some facing the adult. This makes it seem like the audience is the bystander, observing the situation in real time. Also, being extremely close and the contrast between the blue and white opaque colors, as well as the height distance really attracts your attention first. The focal point would be the adult, due to the lie of the sight of most of the children. Also, again, the stark color difference.
