Immigration, a word that means to come and live in a foreign country. This is a desire for some for many reasons: jobs, a better income, to locate a loved one, or a better life. However, this is not always feasible, so they find another way. In the story, Enrique’s mother leaves their country and enters America illegally so her children can go to school and don’t have to live in poverty. This is a sacrifice many parents make, even if it means to never see their children again; it is a sacrifice that leaves children feeling confused, angry, abandoned, and makes them leave their countries to find their parents and be reunited again. "I am going to find my mom," Enrique says, quietly.” (Enrique’s Journey, chapter 2). Here, Enrique has been badly beaten and robbed by fellow immigrants while trying to get on a train to the border to find his mother in California. This is not uncommon for children who go seeking out their missing parents, most are robbed from, beaten, raped, and in worse cases, killed by fellow immigrants or police. This states that Greece, like many countries is facing poverty and many people are trying to leave illegally. This is not uncommon for those who are in a situation where they are not making enough money. Many people try to leave their country to find work and have a better life. However, often time they don’t succeed due to the immigration police who go to extensive measures to keep them out of the country even if it means breaking laws themselves.
