Eliot Porter’s photograph, “Sunset on Colorado at Kane Creek, Glen Canyon, Utah, October 1960, appeared at Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. The intended audience of this photograph is anyone who enjoys art but more specifically those who have a love for nature and all its splendor and beauty. The photo contains many different elements of nature including mountains, a rainbow, a body of water, and clouds. In my opinion, the main purpose of this photograph is to present the splendor of creation and nature but also to symbolically convey that there are light and beauty after a storm. I feel the photographers message through this picture is to not only portray the natural beauty of our world but I think there is a subtle hidden message in the picture that speaks to light and joy appearing after a time of darkness or a storm. The different perfectly proportioned elements that Porter was able to capture in one image struck me immediately. The main subject of the picture is the mountain because it stands out dramatically with the brightness of light that is shining on it. The more I look at this photo the more it seems to be jumping out at me that the photographer may not have just been wanting to show a pretty picture of

It is not necessarily a monochromatic image but it comes closest to this category. The image largely consists of the sky and foggy mountains giving the image a mostly light blue or low intensity red. Yosemite at this time of day is full of cool calming colors that make one feel safe, and comforted but also some warm color from the trees and the shading around them. The mix of cool and warm gives the beholder a feeling of relaxation and awe.…

Kevin Fedarko sends a message to his readers that the Grand Canyon is beautiful and it should be preserved. Humans should not continue to create more structures in the canyon because it takes away from the natural beauty, but Fedarko also makes it clear that dams already built by humans have beauty in them too. The message that fedarko wants his audience to receive is that nature and technology can be combined and can create outstanding things, but there needs to be a balance. Humans cannot get too carried away with technology and forget to see the natural beauty that surrounds everything. Kevin Fedarko uses metaphors to illustrate the beauty that is seen in the Grand Canyon.…

Across the centuries, the natural world has been utilized in countless different artistic efforts to convey a general philosophy or social idea. Whether it’s used to find truth in the world or oneself, or to take a break from the over- industrialized, anxiety driven-earth, people have sought out nature to find the path of which they are intended to follow- obtaining the complete knowledge of the natural world, or the deep interconnectedness of all things. Fan Kuan’s ink on silk painting, “Travelers Among Mountains and Streams,” made in 1000 C.E., and Jacob Van Ruisdael’s oil on canvas painting, “Edge of a Forest with a Grainfield,” made in 1656, exemplify these concepts beautifully. In Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountains and Streams,…

It is a photograph, with three-dimensional and naturalistic qualities. It has a narrative and is it asymmetrical. The main feeling I get when I look at this photograph is love. Thomas Cole who was considered a renowned painter and father of the Hudson River School of art wrote “American Scenery.” Within this piece he expressed his overall feelings about America and the importance of the sublime nature that surrounds us. Although his paintings could relay a story within themselves, Cole felt the need to further educate those who would listen. Through his work and one of his many paintings titled “The Oxbow” Cole expresses his view on having a deeper consideration for the American scenery that surrounds us because that beauty is unfortunately ever changing and quickly passing away.…

The passage paints a picture of a dark sky, lit only by the light of the full moon, reflecting off of the snow. In describing the setting as “at night under the full moon,” with the additional detail of “the black-striped snow” Munro sets a scene that would seemingly be represented in black and white alone, whether by choice of the filmmakers, or the lack of viable palette variety. This passage could hardly be any more contrasted with…

William Cullen Bryant's poem, “The Prairies,” expresses the beauty he first encounters of America's prairies and contrasts the beautiful and abundant image of an alive nature; “And fresh as the young earth, ere man had sinned/ The Prairies. I behold them for the first,” with the grim inevitability of death within the prairie. But from what death takes nature always gives back even when man has made it difficult to continue (495-497). Through juxtaposed images of life and death; Bryant is able to show their correlation, and personify nature to paint a beautiful, and haunting image of the prairies and early America.…

The three areas of focus include the bridge, a landscape that include a lake and the shoreline, lastly the sky which is bright red signifying the setting of the sun. The hills at the background create a bridge between the foreground and the background of the paint. The two figures at the edge of the bridge are drawn in upright straight just like the bridge while the separate figure is drawn in wavy lines like those of the sky and the hills. This is used to bring a connection between the separate individual and nature. The other two are not aware of their surroundings but the painter is one with nature hence he can feel and hear the scream of nature while the others do…

The metaphysical representation of the landscape is conveyed in the romanticised poem, “Train Journey” by Judith Wright. Within the context of New England District, Wright’s representation of nature’s beauty and power has the potential to leave individuals in the state of awe whereby they come to realise the sublime hidden aspects of nature. To begin with, The phrase, “Train” in the title, symbolises the physical barrier which separates society from the authenticity of the physical landscape, individuals perceptions of nature has been altered as a result of the change in context, where many individuals switch their values from the beauties of nature to other aspects.
