“Be Ye Therefore Perfect-Eventually” given by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland The bi-annual meeting of general conference has many purposes. For example, our course text teaches us that a few reasons for this worldwide meeting is for edifying the saints, sustaining leaders, conducting church business, and carrying the missionary message to the world. However, my personal favorite purpose for general conference is to help bring us closer to our Heavenly Father and our Savior. While addresses in general conference help us do this in various ways, Elder Holland’s talk “Be Ye Therefore Perfect-Eventually” was exactly the talk I needed to hear this last session of conference. He was encouraging us for personal improvement, but in a way that “doesn’t include …show more content…
He called 3 days later and told us that he had never been so low in his life, but that it taught him how much he needed the gospel and the Savior more than his alcohol dependency and told us that he had officially quit drinking alcohol. He remained sober for the weeks after as we helped him prepare for his baptism. He remained sober for the months after that as we helped him prepare for his ward mission leader calling and to receive the Melchezedic priesthood. He remained sober for the years after that as he prepared to be married and sealed to another beautiful convert in the Guatemala City temple. I witnessed a miracle as Heavenly Father helped us reconnect just a week before my mission was ending, as Jorge lived miles away from my last area and only had a construction job there. When I saw him, I did not think about the baggy clothes he was wearing in the park, I did not think about his change in baptismal date, I did not think about his flaws at all. I saw him as a growing man that is doing his best to continue walking forward every day, and I received a witness that that is how our Heavenly Father views him. And a reminder that that is how He views all of His

There is a feeling that many of us humans in Earth have yet to catch. A couple weeks ago, Holy Ghost had its annual service trip to the Dominican Republic. I had heard about the trip from Dr. O’Connor when I did the summer enrichment program in 6th grade. I looked forward to going on the trip when I got to Ghost, and I got the chance this summer. At first I was really nervous, but by the second day there I realized how special the trip truly is. I got to give my Spanish a jog, I got to meet a ton of new people, and I had my eyes opened to a new way of living.…

Matthew 7:13,14 Every day God's salvation draws nearer, which means we must be more diligent and persevering in our walk with the Him. We do not have the "luxury of time" to be consumed, preoccupied, or even fatigued in our day-to-day responsibilities that we become distracted to what God wants to accomplish in each of our lives and in His church! We are nearing the day of the "coming of our Lord and Savior," which signifies the need to pick-up our pace so that we will finish our earthly race and hear our Lord proclaim, "Well done thou good and faithful servant..."…

After two failed relationships and a dubious call to celibacy, some may suspect that John gave up his aspirations for love. This is far from the truth. Less than a year and a half after Grace married, John hastily married a forty-one year old widow named Mary Vazeille on a whim. His brother Charles rebuked him, but John could not be dissuaded from marriage. About a month after the wedding, John made a peculiar comment concerning marriage that characterized his own ignorance toward the subject: “I cannot understand how a Methodist preacher can answer it to God to preach one sermon or travel one day less in a married than in a single state.”…

Leaving the safety of the United States and traveling into another country seemed frightening on March 19, 2014. The trip was a trip to a foreign land, and an atmosphere full of people and culture my eyes have not once made contact with. I was extremely excited to take such a journey, yet I had never felt such a pounding fear of the unknown strangle my thoughts, such as the one the day I boarded my flight. I traveled to Chiquimula, Guatemala for a mission trip along with my father and many friends from church. I originally thought was going on a trip for me to bless others in need.…

One of my middle brothers, Lucas Wheeler, was always the troublemaker of the family. Ever since the day my father left my mother, he has made my mom’s life a living hell at times. He was by far the closest to my biological father, so the day that he left was not easy for Lucas. He used to spit at my mom when he was mad at her and said “how do you like that?” My mother would have to hold him down while he threw a temper tantrum and when he was done, he would cry and say “I just want my dad”.…

Paul’s inaugural address in Philippians 1:3-11 gives thanks to God and expresses joy for the effectual, transformative work of Christ that courses through lives of the Philippians believers, which has caused them to be partners “in the gospel from the first day until now” (v.5). Yet, Paul does not conclude his salutation with thanksgiving and rejoicing. Rather, Paul sees the gospel work through an eschatological lens evidenced through his assurance in that “he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (v. 6). Therefore, concludes his greeting with a prayer that their love would “abound more and more” so that they would be “pure and blameless in the day of Christ […] to the glory and praise of God” (v. 9-11).…

The one verse I will forever live by is Psalm 143:8, “Let the morning bring the word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life”. This verse tells me that I do not need to fear about singing in front people, or fear befriending people, or fear leading others, or fear anything in this world because the moment I gave my heart to God, He continually held onto it with such a delicacy. He knows that I trust and have faith in Him, and likewise, I know He trusts and has faith in me. Many people do not think about God having faith and trust in them, but He does.…
