First of all, political instability and attempted coups made her life in Haiti feel incredibly insecure, unstable, and frightening because anything unexpected could occur and profoundly transform her entire life. The chances are that her life was difficult because there was so much injustice and food was seldom sufficient. The injustice in Haiti made it extremely difficult to make the right choices. She probably have seen hundreds of people get mistreated, but couldn’t do anything about it; it’s awfully frightening when you’re not able to control what happens to you. Furthermore, the government was oppressive, and Danticat might not have been able to enjoy the hobbies she loves, like writing, without facing serious repercussions. Regardless, writing could actually be her relief from everything that’s happening in Haiti. A myriad of people fled Haiti in the 1970s, including Danticat and her family. In conclusion, the corruption in Haitian politics negatively shaped Danticat’s life.

Jana Evans Braziel contrasts Haitian folklore with stories primarily from Edwidge Danticat’s Krik? Krak!, but also from her earlier stories, Breath, Eyes, Memory and The Farming of Bones. These comparisons are made through the lens of historical figures Défilée and Sor Rose. Braziel thoroughly examines the topic of maternity in each of Danticat’s stories, characterizing maternity-related metaphors in these stories as “maternal refusal.” The particular examples are all unique, but they contribute to the theme that the politics of maternity for Haitian women is difficult for a host of reasons.…

When we think of someone being silent there are many reasons for that and sometimes we think the worst of it; we may think that they are ignoring us, they are mad at us or just plain rude. This is a very American concept as in other countries silence is common and normal, but we don’t look at it as a defense mechanism to continue surviving. This is shown by looking specifically at countries within Africa that were affected by the Atlantic and Indian Ocean slave trades. You would think they would be out and open about their experiences and how it has left their countries, however, you see the opposite, these things are not spoken about out in public. In some instances, such as in Ghana, it was illegal to discuss slave origins, in Madagascar…
