Family And Love In Tim Burton's Films

Family and love are said to be the two most important factors in a person’s life. It’s what makes one feel protected in a world where the abnormal ones are seen as unfit. Tim Burton, a famous filmmaker views those two factors as a necessity in life. Throughout his films, he expresses his viewpoint by using lighting and shots. In his films Edward Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton uses lighting to show the connection between the broken and the parental figures who step up. Within one of his films, Edward Scissorhands, he had included a scene that was bright, and childlike. He introduced this scene by using front lighting. In Edward Scissorhands, he had used a two shot to present Pam and Edward together. When Edward is first taken out of his home, he was driven by Pam back to her house. During this specific scene, Pam speaks to Edward, convincing him that everything would work out eventually. Right as they met, Pam had been attempting to comfort him, and give him the love that he had not gotten while he was alone. Another example would be the close up used in Alice in Wonderland. When the Red Queen’s hunters had come to the tea party, the Mad Hatter had hidden Alice into a teapot after she was shrunk once again. The camera had taken close ups of Alice, the Mad Hatter’s expressions, as well as the teapot that Alice was hidden in. When the camera had shifted onto the Mad Hatter, it showed his facial expressions in great detail. He had been glancing towards the teapot every so often with the intention of wanting to keep Alice safe. He had hid her and lied to the guard, risking his life, but this can tell the viewer that he cares for her, deepening the viewers understanding that he acts as a
