Many problems arise from the incompatibility of the significant others and is usually fueled by their distinct personalities. The red dish symbolizes danger and passion so Mattie is represented as the seductress. Ethan on the other hand attempts to balance his life through constant phases of consciousness. Due to the passivity of the couple, their relationship is rocky. Ethan remembers “when the door of her room had closed on her he remembered that he had not even touched her hand.” (Wharton 85). Mattie and Ethan are very passive about their feelings so they show conflicting signs towards each other. This leads to misunderstandings and the evasiveness to keep the affair away from Zeena. Also, Zeena later catches on to the scheme and personified as the cat, the “toxic” presence of Zeena keeps Ethan and Mattie separate. Zeena will constantly try to separate Ethan and Mattie but the major factor is Ethan’s infidelity. He wishes to be with Mattie but struggles with the ties of responsibility and duty as a husband to Zeena. This drags out the relationship between Ethan and Mattie. Mattie on the other hand, is very submissive to Ethan and makes Ethan feel useful under the harsh remarks of Zeena. They are supposed to be caring and although Zeena eventually cared for the physically and mentally unstable Mattie and Ethan, Ethan’s final decision to leave Mattie for Zeena led to the tragic outcome. His decision, impacted by the patriarchal society led him to act chivalrous and attempt to fix the problems he caused. In today’s society, compatibility is important in building a successful relationship since women can make their decisions in life. They can leave their marriage without facing the scrutiny of society and have their own lives separate from the household. Through arranged marriages in 18th century England, the Georgian Aristocracy was able to acquire the wealth generated by the commercial class, while the bourgeois managed to acquire the title associated with the nobility. These arranged marriages grew so common in the 18th century that the government enacted acts to prevent lovers from eloping. One such act known as “An Act for Better Preventing Clandestine Marriages,” drawn up several years after Hogarth’s Marriage A La Mode series, was put in place to prevent young adults of the aristocracy from thwarting their parents wishes.…

The treatment of people with mental illnesses and handicaps has been a long lasting problem because of the misunderstandings of police, mental hospitals, and society. Many documentaries and movies have been made to show the lives lead in mental hospitals and institutions. News reports have talked about police shooting suspects who have been mentally ill. Most of these events could have been avoided if people could try and learn about mental illnesses, instead of hiding them away from the rest of the world. Just because they are physically or mentally different from the norm, society expects them to be maintained at an institution like dogs in a dog pound.…

Throughout the novel, Edith Wharton presented a variety of positive and negative images that provided depth to the characters and the storyline itself. For instance, the “cherry-coloured ‘fascinator’” about Mattie’s head was a positive image, literally giving her a fascinating quality (Wharton 26-27). The scarf’s color, a light shade of red, is a symbol of passion, joy, sensitivity, love, desire, and emotional intensity; therefore, the scarf accentuates Mattie’s passion and exuberance, making her seem youthful, as Ethan Frome later pointed out, since the color of the cherry scarf was present in her “fresh lips and cheeks” (Wharton 48). Another image Wharton used to amplify the effect of the plot was the presence of “rigid gooseberry bushes”, which Mattie and Ethan had to walk through to arrive at the back of the house (Wharton 46). These gooseberry bushes create a stiff, harsh atmosphere and foreshadow Zeena’s uncanny silence and the queer instance of being locked outside their own home.…
