Eat Bulaga can be tagged as the nation’s official noontime show to date, with 35 years and still running under its belt. It is a lunchtime tradition to the Filipino’s who just can’t get enough of our Dabarkads ( Tito, Vic, Joey and the rest of the gang). The Show first graced our television screens on July 30, 1979, since then it had survived many challenges as time goes by. The show entertained many viewers here and abroad, until it was franchised also by our neighboring country, Indonesia. The pioneers of the show Tito, Vic and Joey actually started their television careers with their rivals APO Hiking Society (Danny Javier, Jim Paredes, and Buboy Garovillo) in a show called Okay Lang a gag show in 1970’s aired in Channel 13 which is considered the leading network that decade. The Name of the show Eat Bulaga was the idea of Joey de Leon, basing it on a child game “It bulaga” or “Peek a Boo” in English. Since the show is going to be aired lunchtime, what do people do during lunchtime but eat. Hence, the name “Eat Bulaga” was conceptualized with the aim of giving the viewers surprises. The success of the show was not overnight, they struggled to keep the show running and accepted advertising rates below the standard rate (Php 750 was their running rate while the standard was Php 2000).
