When the deer was stuck to the tree, he thrashed trying to get itself free, but only succeeded in making the situation worse for itself. The Deer “trying to paw itself free of the rope,... had scratched its own neck with its hooves… now three of its feet were hooked in the rope under its jaw.” (Dillard 24) meaning the deer sincerely wanted to get out of the situation, but just couldn’t help itself.
