Dylan Klebold was an intelligent student but had an extremely hard time fitting in at his high school. He befriended Eric Harris and they became close friends due to the similar interests they had. Dylan was hard on himself with his physical appearance, he was very self- loathing and girls did not find him appealing. Depression had a huge impact and was the underlying reason for the actions of Dylan Klebold in the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999. As time went by Dylan’s depression worsened which caused his withdrawal, shyness and all passion for learning to disappear.
Dylan’s depression weighed on him every day and affected him in his real life situations. One example that shows how depression affected his social life is when his friend Zack started dating Devon. Dylan was so depressed and lonely that when Zack began hanging out with him less he got very angry. Dylan even stated in one of his journal entries “Ever since Devon (who I wouldn’t mind killing) has loved him- that’s the only place he’s been!” (Cullen, 185) Dylan’s jealous was derived from his loneliness that was caused from his severe depression. She goes into detail about her son Dylan’s daily life including his emotions, personality traits and his day to day activities. In the article Susan Klebold states “It was evident that he no longer liked school; worse, his passion for learning was gone”. (Klebold, Sue, 2009) This statement alone can be a clear indicator of someone with depression. Something that Dylan once liked and achieved in no longer gave him joy. Another indicator that Dylan could have been depressed was his constant run in with authorities. Dylan would continue to do things he knew he should not be doing even after multiple consequences.
