Reflection On Dreamers After DACA

Improved Essays
The event I decided to attend was the presentation “Dreamers after DACA” by Maria Belen Sisa. The main reason I decided to attend this presentation was mainly due to the fact that the DACA situation is something I am actively involved in and hearing stories of individuals under this program gives me insight as to what is currently happening to them after the program was ended. Sisa also discussed ways to get involved and take action to demand a clean Dream Act which was another factor as to why I attended.
This event relates to the course’s theme because it discussed the issue of ethnicity and ethnic groups in education and employment. In the beginning of the semester, we discussed the topic of ethnicity and race and the role they play in

She claimed how if it was not for her light skin, hair, and colored eyes, many would have discriminated against her in school like they have done so to her other minority peers. In class, we talked about how many perceive race as the key factor to determine superiority and intelligence, and with the comment that Sisa made regarding her appearance being accepted as part of the majority group and being treated like them goes to show what role the race of someone has when it comes to society. Sisa later continues that when it came to applying to universities it was then when she lost the support from her classmates and educators due to the fact that it was known she was undocumented, which made them believe that she was no longer capable of what they use to think she was, solely on the fact that her ‘real’ race was revealed. Here you can see the power society has put on the concept of race and how common it is to have resources that help the majority group but very little to help the minority …show more content…
Prior to this course, I thought of gender as physical characteristics, not as a form of identity, and this course did an excellent job in explaining how gender is non-binary and how much more can be included within it. Moving on to race, I always thought of it as being biological, however, after this course, I learned that race is not real, it is simply a social construct used by majority groups to categorizes people who appear different from them into groups and find a way to ‘control’ them. In regards to identity, this perhaps was the most influential part of the course, I simply thought of identity as a form of describing your interests and hobbies, not specifically who you are within, such as your sex, gender, culture, sexual orientation and how all these identities affect your life in both positive and negative

What Exactly Is The DACA Program All About? A percentage of children were brought to the U.S by their parents to provide a better life than what they were living in their own country. Years later they were given hope by creating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act by our first African-American president Barak Obama who finally understood those who wanted a better life. Now, as John Goodwin states, they were “Legally Present, But Not Yet Legal” (qtd.…

How can you condemn a child to poverty because you are unwilling to allow them to continue their education because they are illegal, and furthermore the actions, which made them illegal, were not even their action but rather their parents? How can you rightfully sit back while back while this atrocity happens so often? All this could be solved with the DREAM Act that would be implemented to allow for illegal immigrants (who fit the required criteria) to be allowed to pursue their secondary education, go into the military, and begin their track to earning citizenship. The DREAM Act will keep our nation on top of the competition in this time of globalization and flattening of the world by finding new curious and passionate minds who are willing…

The television was blaring, with an inaudible voice of a reporter; I repeatedly heard my name being called by aunt. I was brought back from my short haze, and read the headline on the television, “Trump’s Administration Ends DACA,” chills ran through my body as I re-read the headline. I knew what that meant for me, I was back to square one, and the risks I took to acquire DACA status were now again in front of me, nevertheless the government now knew of my legal status and that of my family, putting not only me at risk of deportation, but also potentially my guardians. Once I came to my senses, I urgently asked my aunt, “What can we do?” She replied with a dreadful expression, “I don’t know.”…

Desmond and Emirbayer’s article attempts to elucidate the configuration of race and racial dominance through the lenses of recent theoretical innovations. As oppose to the then predominant perspective on race that portraits it as a natural phenomenon, these authors describe race as a dynamic, and symbolic social construct that evolves and changes historically. These transformation to be understood must be informed by the influence of other social constructs such as ethnicity and nationhood. This summary is a detailed account of the article that bring at the end in support example from Lopez and Alba in their respective articles. Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

Many changes have occurred regarding education, altering what is taught, how material is taught, and what material is no longer available to be taught. The removal of course material that is offered to students is not uncommon in educational institutions, however, the material removed is that with usually very little educational or cultural significance. Seeing as Mexican-American Ethnic studies was not drawing enough student interest, some schools had begun to drop Mexican-American ethnic studies from their course catalogue. The results of this action came as a shock, as many individuals were outraged and took action in many different manners, barring the question: should educational institutions consider reinstating Mexican American Ethnic…

Race is associated with biology of human beings, whereas ethnicity is associated with the origin and culture. An individual coming into a society where his ethnicity and race is unfamiliar, an opportunity is open for both the individual and the population of that society to learn and get to know each other. It is imminent that the people of different racial backgrounds, especially multi-ethnic groups, will face all kinds of stereotypes when coming to a new society that is completely unfamiliar with the physical features, culture, traditions and world view of that ethnic group. However, that can be rectified with positive involvement and communication in different areas of that society. Individuals coming from various ethnic and racial backgrounds…
