After talking and praying about it with my parents, I decided to not try out. Recently, my parents told me they were going to take a stand for me over this situation. They said there were other things that were said that made them believe I made the right decision about basketball tryouts. This overwhelmed me with such joy. To think my parents would go to bat for me helped me feel protected, safe, and cared for.
The people of Martin Luther King’s era must have felt the same way. So many times people are afraid to take a stand for what they believe is right. That’s why the words of Dr. King are still so important today. His quote: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” explain that when we neglect to take a stand over unfair treatment of others, we won’t be able to live with ourselves.
