In line with all eastern spiritual traditions, Eckhart Tolle emphasizes that the mind is the mischief maker, the maker of the mess in our lives, the obstacle that prevents us from realizing our true nature. The operations of the mind are instrumental, but not ends-in- themselves. We get attached to the mind and its activities and create an illusion of our self from that identification. When the mind moves away, the radiant Self of joy shines forth. Else, it remains shadowed by the mind and its incessant activities.
Awareness is simply one’s natural state of felt oneness with Being, which is infinite, immutable and eternal and that which is your Real self beyond your name and form. Being is one’s true Self, an ever-present presence. It is beyond nāma and rūpa, name and form. To abide in this Self, this Being, is Enlightenment. This abidance happens when the “illusion of the self” – the illusion of the Reality of the body and the mind - is realized. Being cannot be realized by intellectual knowledge like for example sugar will not be really known despite having all the knowledge about sugar. Sugar is known in the real sense only when it is tasted.
One going towards the Being, in becoming more and aware, the mind and the mind are neither ignored nor abandoned. It is only by remaining in the body that the experience of enlightened is had. An out-of-body experience howsoever fascinating it be, it is not sustainable. In the end, one will always have to return to the body. That is where real transformation happens. That is why a real saint never talks about mortifying or punishing the body. The veil of the body and mind needs to be lifted to peep into your real Being, your Being of pure awareness.
