Dr. Copeland is an extremely wise man which tends to get in the way of his family. He believes that because he went to college in the days when a college education was harder to get for black people, that his children should go to college too and become successful. Copeland would like to see in others. He wants people to stand up and make a change that they want to see in the world. Dr. Copeland said in part one, chapter five, “I mean that I am always looking. I mean that if I could just find ten Negroes- ten of my own people- with spine and brain and courage who are willing to give all that they have-” (p.66). He wants to get a team of strong men together to with backbone to create an education solution to end segregation. He needs these men to be very well educated in their fields. He said that he is only interested in real truths, he is not interested in the stories of people o just want attention but rather the real information. He does not want to bother with people who say they want to end segregation and then when the time comes for them to do something, they step down and show cawarness. He takes pride in not letting people see his feelings injured. There are far too many people in the world that do not care what people think of them or how strong they are. They will do whatever it takes to make themselves feel better except for when it comes to helping others or being strong. That is one of the things hat Dr. Benedict Mady Copeland is so afraid of for his children.
