Individuality is the quality of a particular person that distinguishes them from others. Often times in the world, we are forced to give up our individuality and conform with others. In Logan Fey’s article, The Sociology of Leopard Man, he claims that to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes, talents, morals, etc. I agree with Fey, that being human is to be an individual, but some of our traits have been influenced by other people, or sometimes we are forced to give up our individuality for certain things, but we all must find our own way of living as ourselves content in society. Widely regarded as a timeless and classic masterpiece, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey delivers an exciting story that follows the insane stories recounted by Chief Bromden in a mental facility. One must wonder, what factors make Kesey’s work a masterpiece? Thomas Foster’s book How to Read Literature Like a Professor gives readers insight about the qualities that make the novel a masterpiece: such as the progressions by characters, the allusions to the Bible, and the deeper political issues hidden in the book. Ken Kesey’s, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, indulges in the escape from society’s boundaries through natural human expression while acknowledging the freedom this independence creates. While people build up walls (seen quite literally in acknowledgement to the ward), The ability to express human nature is present in McMurphy’s character as masculinity and virility become a gateway to freedom in the ward. Randle McMurphy, a character noted for his edge and independence, makes an entrance that draws great attention to the dehumanized patient’s faces while staying in the psychiatric hospital. McMurphy is depicted as a caricature of life. The narrator says, “The way he talks, his wink, his loud talk, his swagger all remind me of a car salesman or a stock auctioneer - or one of those pitchmen you see on a sideshow stage” (Kesey 13).…

Humans are fundamentally different than any other existing organism, not only because of the obvious diversity in physical form, but also because of the uniqueness humans have from each other. As Neil Gaiman, author of the novel Anansi Boys, inspires us by writing, “Each person who ever was or is or will be has a song. It isn't a song that anybody else wrote.
