Without a doubt, the best kind of short story is one with a surprise ending that shocks the reader. Both “Desiree’s Baby” and “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” had completely unexpected endings that shocked the reader. Desiree's Baby is a short story based on a girl that is married to a wealthy man named Armand. After they were married they had a baby. When the baby is born, Armand at first was very happy. However the baby's skin color started to show that the baby was a quadroon ( had one biracial parent). Armand quickly assumed that it was Desiree that was the mixed one so he told her and her baby to leave. “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is a short story about a slave owner named Payton that tries to destroy a railroad that the north side was using at the civil war because he didn't want the north to win. Payton is caught trying to do this and is facing execution. Both these short stories will be compared and contrasted in this essay. They both use different types of irony. This essay will show how both short stories “Desiree’s Baby” and “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” use irony. …show more content…
The most interesting part about these stories is that the reader thinks that he/she is getting the whole story, but then out of nowhere there is a surprising event that happens. Both stories use situational irony which is why they have very surprising when they end. I wouldn't say that the stories have happy endings because the main characters die. When we read we are use to happy endings, but both stories had a sad or an unusual ending which made the story even

Here are some examples of how one of the types of irony, dramatic irony, ties into this story. First off is an when Mary goes to the market to go buy some dinner for Patrick. “Patrick’s decided he’s tired and doesn't want to eat out tonight.” This is the start of dramatic irony because Patrick is never going to eat out! At this point Patrick is already dead and Mary is just trying…

Irony is the major key factor in the author's voice in the story. In the story she drops many different ironic situations. When the family left for the trip the Grandmother brought her cat, because she would worry about the cat's safety if she left it at home for three days. In a crazy turn of events the cat caused the family to get in the car accident. Which led to them meeting the misfit.…

The first example of irony is about the grandmother wanting to go down a dirt road to stay away from The Misfit. It is expected that they would not see The Misfit. Instead, they find The Misfit on their little journey. In the reading it states, “There was a secret:-panel in this house,” she said craftily, not telling the truth but wishing that she were, “and the story went that all the family silver was hidden in it when Sherman came through but it was never found…” (O’Connor 5).…

In this short reader's response essay I will simply describe or explain why I think, feel, or believe that the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek" is the best from this week. I think the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek” was the best from this week. This was the the best short story to me because it offers two different types of conflicts and it also has the best plot. It shows that the main character Peyton was experiencing issues within himself as well as with a few members of the Civil War Union. The plot of this story is about a man by the name of Peyton Farquhar, he is a plantation owner.…

Remembering an old plantation, she visited as a young girl she craftily says, “There was a secret panel in this house” (211) drawing the attention of her grandchildren which in turn persuades their father to take the turn on account of the children’s determination. It’s ironic that every time the Grandmother begins to talk, she says something negative and for every negative thing she states the story turns negative. As the family drives down the dirt road O'Connor adds another clue to symbolize the family’s death in an ironic representation. By describing the old dirt road as something drivers have not traveled on in months the reader can assume if the family will be harmed, but not killed. However, O'Connor goes against common interpretations and kills off the entire family breaking the boundary of…

In all of the short stories mentioned, each of them have their own plot twist. Whether it is a town that holds a “sacrifice” every year, or a child that has fantasies about other children Jackson captivated the reader and shields their eyes until the last bit of writing. A well written novel, “A Study of Short Fiction”, by Joan Hall states, “you will be gripped by a fascination that will not let the reader go until the final showing of revelation” (Hall 3). The stories give hints to the reader, such as names, places, and symbols, but the reader is so caught up in the story that these hints are overlooked until the finale.…

Everyone is miserable with their lives and will eventually die a tragic death. OK, so that isn’t completely the case in this collection of stories, but it isn’t that far off. This is genuinely what the audience is left feeling after reading Bullet in the Brain, Safari, and Happy Endings. In these essays, you get a glimpse at how truly tragic human life is and the frightening realization that there is no such thing as happily ever after. All three stories look at how truly flawed and tragic human life really is.…

Both stories end with lessons that the authors intended to include to help better people’s lives. In the ending of The Coquette Eliza dies alone after the major gets his way rather than being with someone she could’ve been happy with. Foster made this happen because she tried to implement a moral lesson of choosing what’s right rather than choosing greed. Now towards the other story Maria decides to follow her heart instead of listening to what her father would’ve preferred. Tyler added this ended to create a lesson of if you believe something to be right fight to accomplish that rather than following…

In “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood reveals six different scenarios about two main characters named John and Mary. She begins with scenario A to show a version of a perfect fairytale story, “Section A is the most typical, uncomplicated, most unrealistic scenario that results in a happy ending.” By the end of the short story the readers can notice that the conflicts are different but the endings stay the same. The author stereotypes the two main characters by gender, causes the reader to focus on the plot and includes symbolism and irony through the short story. When people think of fairytales they imagine a princess and prince charming but that is not the case here.…

The portrayal of irony is shown in two literary texts, a short story titled “Jacob's Chicken," by Milos Macourek and a poem titled “Porphyria’s Lover," by Robert Browning. Irony is an expression that is used to insinuate sarcasm; it typically signifies the opposite of what is said. In other words, irony is seen as appearance versus reality. The short story “Jacob’s Chicken” is about a passionate child who draws a unique chicken that others do not initially appreciate due to its unusual appearance. Specifically, Jacob’s teacher lacks appreciation for Jacob’s creation.…

In this essay I will be talking about the irony presented in the following stories: The Man to Send Rain Clouds by Leslie Mamon Silko, Dear Mountain Room Parents by Maria Semple, Bedtime Story by Jeffrey Whitmore, Hide and Seek by Douglas L. Haskins, and Equal Rites by Mark Plants. I show why the authors used irony in their stories instead of another literary resource, and why they used it. In The Man to send Rain Clouds, the irony found is that they sprinkled holy water over the corpse, so that he would not be thirsty in the afterlife. They also believed that if they sprinkled his corpse with the holy water, the man’s spirit would send them rain clouds.…
