This brings forth an interesting statistic that I came across in Susan Okin’s article, “Vulnerability by Marriage.” The statistic stated that more women than not find the domestic life as well as the chores and responsibilities associated with it to be boring (Okin 608). She currently works in a hospital as a certified nurse assistant and in a nursing home where she takes care of elderly people. She is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in physical therapy and aspires to achieve her doctorate degree one day. I really like her and if our relationship moves forward, I plan on encouraging her to achieve her goals even if that means putting off or working around potential steps in our relationship such as marriage or having kids. Although it is very early to be thinking about things like that, I find it amazing how my thoughts of the future are much different than before I took this class.
The most relevant theme of Catholic Social Teaching that I feel I may apply in medical school and in the field of medicine is that of enhancing people’s lives and dignity. How will I achieve this? Well, for one I hope to free my mind of sexism. After being harmed by bad breakups and by some unpleasant experiences with other females, I think I may have developed sexist thoughts assumptions towards females. I hope to harbor courage in every person who is doubting their intellectual ability. To put this into context, I plan to cheer on every person in medical school regardless of their gender or ethnicity. Socially, I hope to surround myself in a mix of genders, ethnicities, and religions. This will not be difficult considering the diversity found in a medical school. By doing so I will be exposed to different values and beliefs and consequentially will understand them more. This will also help me later on as a doctor as I will be dealing with different people on a daily
