The translation between mediums for artistic and literary works is a difficult transition to make. The formats have different properties and limitations. The transition from a live medium to a medium with permanence is especially difficult in that the work loses the interaction between work and audience. In the YouTube adaptation of David Henry Hwang’s play Yellow Face, the use of the site’s annotations feature changes the theater experience with a different kind of interactivity, uniqueness, and visual composition only possible because of the new medium. Although since replaced with Cards (Statt), the annotations feature of YouTube is a viewable and clickable layer on top of a video to provide information and/or an interactive experience …show more content…
A significant portion of these are written entirely in capital letters and all are boxed in vibrant colors. This attracts more attention. The same tactic is often used by sensationalist media for clickbait articles to encourage an audience to engage with the content. Also, as mentioned in the LA Times news article, “[t]here's a lot of direct address to the audience in the play”. These moments are punctuated with the use of annotations as well. Speaking directly to the audience engages them and emphasizes the prominence of whatever the actor is saying. By placing annotations on screen at the same time, the annotations are given an equal importance. This is seen in act one of Yellow Face when David Henry Hwang is addressing the audience about yellow face. The annotations pop up at 6:11 in both top corners in yellow – a very eye-catching color, especially against the dull background. The color also reinforces David’s message against yellow face. As a result, the annotations are prominent and becomes something important in the audience’s …show more content…
The development of YouTube is recent, with the first video released just eight years before Yellow Face. (jawed) This explains a lack of various now standard techniques in Yellow Face when it comes to annotations. This is seen in act two of Yellow Face at timestamp 14:04. Again, two yellow top corner annotations are there with information regarding Wen Ho Lee (This brings up the previous association with racism). However, as the camera moves around, the annotations stay still relative to the frame and clip off the faces of many of the protesters. With better planning, the problem could be

In my argumentative essay I defend why football is a dangerous sport and should be avoided with young children ages 6-12. My previous essay used data from secondary sources and primary sources, however supporting my stance with only words was a challenge. Without visual and audio elements I felt I had trouble communicating with the reader. My remediation into a prezi uses a combination of videos and images to present the consequences of playing football. To support my claims I use evidence from expert researchers and certified doctors.…

Foundation Before Density In Scott McCloud’s graphic essay, “Show & Tell”, McCloud uses an appreciable combination of words and images interchangeably to convey clear and comprehensible thoughts, He establishes better, more understood, literature by depicting images directly alongside pieces of text. Evidently, pictures are an associative mechanism that enables newcomer and experienced readers to make visual connections to text they normally would not conclude to by only analyzing and interpreting words (McCloud). Moreover, aside from images allowing readers to make connections, illustrations are particularly crucial components in literary works because they can convey coherent messages all on their own. In all, visual depictions in literature…

However, yellowface continued in spite of that. Yellowface impersonation is part of representational practice that controls and excludes Asians and Asian Americans from self-representation. Explicit yellowface is when an Asian or Asian American role is played by a non-Asian or non-Asian American with the use of exaggerated makeup or the actual taping of the eyes back to change their shape. Implicit yellowface works in three ways: the suggestion that there is an authentic Asian look, the assumption of similarity of Asians and Asian Americans across the board, and Asian or Asian Americans are asked to play roles that do not align with their…

In chapter three, “Black Faces in High Places”, Taylor discusses the rise of Black political power and its consequences for the Black poor and working class. Johnson’s War on Poverty and Great Society programs, between 1965 and 1972, created many job opportunities for Black workers. African Americans became wealthy enough to “live in spacious homes, buy luxury goods, travel abroad on vacation, spoil their children- to live, in other words, just like well-to-do white folks” (81). The emergence of the black middle class, allowed many Black elected officials to represent Black communities. The experiences of this small African American group became success stories of “how hard work could enable Blacks to overcome institutional challenges” (82).…

When reading, a good reader makes sure to do six things: follow the plot, form opinions, wonder, visualize, make connections, and become emotionally invested(video, laulima: week5). To make these things plausible you must annotate your text. Annotating a text is basically marking up a specific text, article, or reading and creating your own thoughts so that you can better understand it. Everyone may have their own way of annotating a text, but some techniques used are writing brief summaries, listing or numbering ideas, sketching pictures and charts to explain difficult concepts, making predictions of possible test questions, note confusing ideas for clarification, and underlining key points( faculty.catawba.edu/unbothered/war/text annotation.pdf).…

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…

In the play Yellow Face, David Henry Hwang tries to address the cultural problem of discrimination in the media against the Chinese. David Henry Hwang tries to show injustices of the united states when it comes to the Broadway show who tried to cast a white man as the main role in the Asian Broadway play. He hoped to end discrimination, and try to get the roles filled by real Asian-American’s than by men in so called yellow face. He tries to show how easy it is for anyone to pass themselves off as multiple races, and it is a very narrow problem when it comes to this specific ethnicity. The very thing that is making the issue so complex is the fact this is such a sensitive issue when it comes to the general public about discrimination.…
