In the first two cantos of the poem is a introduction of Dante’s journey through hell he explains how he lost his way and does not remember how he did. Walking through this dark forest he sees a hill with a light shinning on it, on top. the hill seemed like a better idea to be in then being in a dark forest. At first he attempts to climb towards the light, but however as Dante is climbing he is stopped by three beast; a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf and they force he to go back. Walking through the dark valley of hell Dante sees a human in the woods which soon reveals itself to be the spirit of a roman poet named Virgil. He then only warns Dante that to reach heaven they must go through a place of enternal torture. Dante later then explains to virgil that he can only recall two men who ever entered the after and returned: the Apostle Paul who taught the gospel of christ and Aeneas a trojan hero, Dante then says he considers himself less worthy than them and fears that he may not survive hell.3 Virgil and Dante reach the gate of hell. Dante hears crying of torment and suffering of lost souls, these souls werent allowed in heaven nor hell. After passing the gates of hell they encounter a river called Acheron, where a boat approaches theyre way with a old man, named charon who explains to Dante to stay away from the dead souls and who takes them to the other side. Dante faints after a terrible earthquake which caused winds and fire to rise up, Dante faints of fear. After Dante returns to consciousness he finds himself in the other side of the river where a valley that streches as far as his eyes can see. the first part of hell contained souls that were most likely born before christianity,they werent able to honor god. Dante then is approached by a group of men who come and greet Virgil; they introduced themselves as Horace, Ovid, Homer and Lucan who were very important poets …show more content…
Minos looks upon Dante and notices hes a living soul and warns him not to proceed but with Virgils words they both are good to proceed past Minos. They pass into a dark place where rains fall and visious winds occur. Some of the souls that are in their were part of the trojan war, and Cleopatra. Dante feels sympathy for the people that were sent there because they were dammed by love. Dante calls for a soul to come and speak to him about their story so he calls for a woman named francesca, Francesca recognizes Dante as a living soul and explains her story. She married a old and deformed old man and soon fell in love with her husbands younger brother named Paolo da Rimini she explaind how eventually they kissed and her husband discovered Francesca’s dishonest behavior and he had them killed and sent for eternity to the second circle of hell. When Dante is awake he is now in the Third Circle of Hell, rains still fall but now the rain drops consist of filth and a nasty stench in the
