Inferno starts off on Good Friday in the year 1300. The main character, 35-year-old Dante Alighieri has “lost his path” and now wanders through a dark wood forest. He sees the sun shine down on the top of a mountain and he attempts to reach it. His attempt fails as he is threatened by three animals: a leopard, lion, and a she-wolf. Frightened and helpless he returns back to the woods. He then encounters the spirit of Virgil, Dante’s idol and a great Roman poet. He is there to help guide Dante back to the top of the mountain, back on the right path. Virgil says their path will take them through Hell and then they will eventually reach Heaven, where Dante’s deceased lover awaits. Besides him being one the two main characters, his role is Inferno is crucial. He is Dante’s guide and throughout the story can be seen as Dante’s mentor. He not only helps guide Dante, he teaches him also. He teaches him valuable information throughout their journey through Hell, similar if not actually life lessons. Although he gives Dante some valuable life lessons himself, he also lets Dante learn the hard way, on his own. He also lets Dante get advice from the real life sinners in Hell. Virgil also helps Dante in other ways besides teaching him lessons. He helps Dante toughen up and feel less pity. Although having compassion and having pity for peoples’ suffering is a normal human trait, Dante’s compassion for sinners reaches an overwhelming level as he sometimes seems to almost suffer with them. The spirit of Virgil can be seen as a representation of human reason, as stated before. He guides and protects Dante through their journey through Hell.
