As for the other poem “pity this busy monster” is describing a world of made not a world of born. Cumming’s is indicating that he himself is referring to science and technology that is created our society, or world as a whole. Due to such technology, it is running the natural world and its beauty. In the last two lines the author states “Listen: there’s a hell of a good universe next door; let’s go.” When mentioning the “next door” I see him as talking about the afterlife and what lies beyond it. Due to the fact that perhaps afterlife may be better than the world we live in today, because the world wouldn’t be all about science and technology.
