Bear teaches Crispin how to do many things including juggling and playing the recorder, Bear teaches Crispin that the birds have a soul and can sing so Crispin can play the recorder because he has a soul. Since Bear cares deeply for Crispin, Crispin thinks he can trust Bear because Bear hadn’t hurt him or deceived him. Crispin didn’t run away when he was stuck against a tree because Crispin knows Bear wouldn’t leave him. Crispin listened to Bear because Bear was mostly right about everything and Crispin thinks that they have begun a friendship, Crispin is comfortable with Bear. Crispin and Bear did a performance at the gate of the Great Wexly to get into the town to ask for penance after they performed Bear said “Honest pay for honest work. And you deserve some, too” which meant Bear wanted to repay Crispin for all the work he did. The gate that was used to get in and out of the city was portcullis which meant it was big and heavy. Friendship is important because Bear gets abducted by soldiers and instead of Crispin getting out safely he goes to the palace and tries to rescue Bear. Crispin said, “I can’t abandon Bear” (pg. 262) because Bear meant a lot to him. Bear and Crispin’s friendship is tested because if Bear and Crispin weren’t good friends Crispin would have left without Bear and Crispin would have forgotten about Bear. When Crispin sees the soldiers he says “Your soldiers took a friend of mine” (pg. 275) so that really showed their friendship because Crispin actually called him a friend and was brave enough to say that to them. Crispin decides to rescue Bear which meant he had to sneak into the palace and free his friend Bear. Crispin showed friendship, kindness, and loyalty when he decided to rescue Bear When Crispin sees Bear, Aycliffe is there and Aycliffe takes them to the gate then Bear said “Crispin . . . I do love you like a son. Did . . . did I betray you?” (pg. 283) After that, Crispin and Bear fought Aycliffe together and killed him, they had to work together because Bear got injured and Crispin only just learned how to use weapons.
