Imagine that your head is pounding, and the pain keeps creeping in until it is impossible to ignore. All light seems too bright and glares in your eyes, causing you to squint. All you wish for is some relief. Most people would reach for an Advil to numb the pain of a chronic headache, even though it is a temporary fix. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn: these are just a couple of the side effects of Advil, one of the most popular non-prescription medications in America. Now more than ever, people are reaching for drugs to suppress even the smallest ailments, but no one considers the long term effects that these drugs can have on their health. Although many holistic practices date back to early Eastern medicine, a surge in popularity was seen in America during the mid-eighteen hundreds. Americans were beginning to be dissatisfied with physicians and allopathic drugs during this time because the human body was viewed as mechanical duplicates of one another (Whorton). Patients wanted a more tailored, focused approach on the specific needs of their bodies. This shift in mindset sparked a revolution of holistic medicine that has continued to expand to the present day. Today, naturopathic medicine includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine, public health measures, hygiene, counseling, minor surgery, homeopathy, acupuncture, prescription medication, intravenous and injection therapy, and naturopathic obstetrics (“Definition of Naturopathic Medicine”).
