Analysis Of Colleges Prepare People For Life By Freeman Hrabowski

When students graduate from high school and then make their way to college a feeling of a mixture of nervousness and excitement consumes ones’ mind. We prepare ourselves for the inevitable hard work laid ahead of us, so we can build a successful future, but college is much more complex than that. In the essay “Colleges Prepare People for Life”, by Freeman Hrabowski, he talks about the growing noise surrounding the issue students have with college. He brings up matters like finding ways around the high price of college tuition and methods to picking the university that fits each student the best. On the one hand, I agree with Hrabowski that college is not a waste of time. On the other hand, I believe he misses to include the importance of finding the correct degree for a student to ensure for success in their future. Furthermore, students have to face challenges like their high school education not focusing on guiding students to a major best suited for them, students becoming overwhelmed with the demands from college, and students picking a more popular degree and then having to deal with the consequences of dealing with competition and uncertainty in their field.
Hrabowski’s main claim is the importance of going to college and how it can help set an individual up for success. He argues against the popular claim that college education is a waste of time and money. For example, he states: “Yes, colleges prepare people for jobs, but more critically, they prepare people for life” (260). This quote explains that with a college education people not only can have better jobs than a high school graduate but also help people grow into bright intellectuals. He wants people to understand the value of furthering their education beyond high school.
