Wilson compares the stoicism of the normal people to a cow standing in the rain. The animal that endures the cold and wind in the rain has no other choice than to stay right where it is. The average man can, and will do the same, even if the escape route is in plain sight. The standing cow will endure pain and suffer of life, even if it is unnecessary just to stay under the radar. What are the standards of normal? Some of the qualifications are to have a family, a steady job, support your family, and to appear happy in public. Is depression also a requirement to be a normal man? In countless number of cases, the mindless zombies of the human race will suffer from pain and depression, just to be thought of as the normal family, and to be just another cow grazing in the field during the storm. A common term for this is adaptation. The human race will naturally change their mindsets just to fit in. Sometimes, in the case of adaptation, this does not require a change at all. Once a person starts to fit in, no more change is required. Recall the word picture from earlier, the father man who has a job refuses to stand up for himself and takes abuse day in and day out. But what does all this pain and suffrage reward the common man? It rewards him with the mask of happiness and the figure of being normal. The common man will not change because he is already ordinary, and being different wouldn 't allow him to be another cow standing in the cold
