“African American athletes have longed grappled with complicated feelings about patriotism as they represent a country that many say hasn’t always fully embraced them.” In the newspaper article “Land of the Free,” Jaweed Kaleem discusses Colin Kaepernick and his decision to stay seated while the National Anthem was being performed. During the final preseason game Kaepernick kneeled when the anthem started instead of sat. Kaepernick is using the time to honor our country to protest.
What Kaepernick doesn’t understand is he has the freedom to protest because of that flag. Our country does not disgrace African Americans they choose to disgrace themselves. Kaepernick says, “he wants to use his position to help those who ‘don’t have a voice’.”
