Diablo Cody 's Juno and William Shakespeare 's Romeo & Juliet are both stories that explore the idea of young love and its impacts on those involved. Even though these stories are written hundreds of years apart, they both incorporate a unique depiction of death. In Romeo & Juliet, death is depicted in the conventional sense and is met with drama from the characters. On the other hand, Juno depicts death as a much more metaphorical event and is met with a lighthearted and comical atmosphere. Compared to the borderline boring depiction of death within Romeo & Juliet, Juno gives us a much more sophisticated and well-used depiction of death.

This depiction of death can be first seen when Mercutio is injured and slowly dies after quarreling with Tybalt: "I am hurt./ A plague o’ both houses! I am sped/... Why the dev 'l came you between us!/ I was hurt under your arm/... They have made worms’ meat of me. I have it,/ and soundly, too. Your houses!" (III, i, 86-104) After being inflicted with a mortal wound, Mercutio doesn 't lay down and die a peaceful, quiet death. Instead, he curses the both house of Capulet and Montague and continues to give a long speech about the wound which will eventually be his demise. Mercutio 's death could have been tame and short-winded, but Shakespeare wrote the passage with much more drama. Mercutio cursing the feuding houses, describing how it was a small but mortal wound, and cursing Tybalt all adds drama to the story. Second of all, Shakespeare 's Romeo & Juliet is full of death. Mercutio dies fighting Tybalt, Tybalt dies fighting Romeo, Paris dies when fighting Romeo, Lady Montague dies of sadness due to her son being exiled, and Romeo and Juliet commit suicide due to them not being able to be with each other. In total, Romeo & Juliet has six deaths, many of which Shakespeare could have not included. For example, the death of Paris and Lady Montague could have been cut out of the story.
