Cocoa Puffs Research Paper

As children my brother and I always preferred to have cereal for breakfast ,I would have a fruit flavored cereal ,while my brother preferred the chocolate flavored cereal. Cocoa Puffs is a ready to eat cereal made by General Mills and it was introduced in “1958, the cereal consist of small orbs of corn, oats, and rice flavored with cocoa”(Wikipedia).General Mills was known for making cereals that were ready to eat and all you had to do was add milk and fruit if you like. Cocoa Puff’s message to society is to have a delicious breakfast with chocolate while still being healthy for you. Cocoa Puffs portrays itself as a fun and delicious cereal by including activities on the back of the box, they claim the cereal is made with “real cocoa” ,and …show more content…
Multiple cereal brands do this to keep the children entertained and to keep them active while they enjoy their breakfast and they sometimes include a small prize at the bottom of the box. This may sometimes motivate the children to buy more boxes of cereal to collect the rest of the prizes. For example the image in the article by Eric Schlosser “Kid Kustomers” we can see and image of a Frosted Flakes box that contains a prize inside, a child might be tempted to buy more boxes to complete a collection the prizes inside the box.The Cocoa Puffs box that I am analyzing the activity is called “Central Snaps” ,what you do here is look at the five pictures and guess where the pictures were taken. All 5 pictures are taken at certain landmarks to help you determine where they are. The activity can relate to children today because with teens having the ability to post pictures and videos on social media the three cereal mascots: Sonny the Cuckoo Bird(Cocoa Puffs), …show more content…
Personally I can relate to this topic because my mother in particular always looks at the ingredients to determine whether if the product had too much sugar, carbs, calories, etc. Referring back to the claim that Cocoa Puffs is made with real cocoa that might not be the case here, if you look at the ingredient side of the box ,towards the bottom of the box you can see a list of ingredients and the 5th item listed is “Cocoa processed with Alkali”(Cocoa Puffs). Alkali is a chemical compound that neutralizes or effervesces with acids and turns litmus blue. This in other words this means Cocoa is “washed in a potassium carbonate solution that neutralizes the cocoa’s acidity to 7”(Velie). What the Velie means by having the acidity to 7, the acidity is based off the ph scale 1-6 being an acidic item 8-14 being alkalis and 7 being neutral. Based off of this we can see that the company is misleading the consumers by saying that it is made from real cocoa because it has to go through a process before it can be mixed in with the other ingredients. Another negative affect that can occur when eating the cereal is it can become comfort food ,for example my brother has a lot of comfort food from chips to hamburgers. One of his favorite comfort foods is Cocoa Puffs, I often see him in the

In many advertisements of the cereal brand “Cinnamon Toast Crunch” the slogan “Why do kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?” can be seen or heard. This is in reference to the product and their consumer. It is portrayed as a life long question that everyone will always ponder. It would be my best bet that they are trying to get parents to buy the product for themselves or their children to see if they can find out the answer. On more recent television commercial advertisements the slogan “Crave those crazy squares” can be heard along with an animated cinematic of anthropomorphic pieces of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal going crazy over the smell of each other, resulting in them performing silly antics and shenanigans that involve cannibalizing…

The vivid example of children’s cereal allows me to agree with his point that marketing provides different experiences with cereals. That is just one of the many ways Luntz uses logos to explain and confirm his ideas. The first main idea Luntz presented was that, “The company persona is the sum of the corporate leadership, the corporate ethos, the products and services offered, interactions with the consumers, and, most importantly, the language that ties it all together” (Luntz 354).…
