Resistance to Civil Government (Civil Disobedience) By Henry David Thoreau If we were told that we did not have to follow the government, but that we can protest against their laws to make the government to how we believe it should be run, who would protest? Many people before the 1840’s just followed the government without knowing that they could create a change, until Henry David Thoreau changed the thinking of many with his essay on Civil Disobedience. If we break it down even more we get civilians not obeying. The two words came from the essay Resistance to Civil Government by Henry David Thoreau, and was used to describe the event when Thoreau refused to pay for the poll taxes. Throughout history there has been many instances where people have used civil disobedience in history to make a stance against certain laws or government demands. Civil Disobedience is a crime, but when the person chooses to act in civil disobedience they do it to create a change politically, socially, or economically within the world.
