His ultimate freedom becomes a big issue in the book and we realize this when Chris writes “happiness is better when shared” in his personal diary. By saying this Chris is telling the reader that he truly never felt free and that he would have been better off staying at home with his family. After Chris’s death, Krakaeur eventually finds about Chris’s adventure through his diary. On that diary, one of the last thing Chris Wrote was “that only a life similar to the life of those around us, merging with it without a ripple, is genuine life, and that an unshared happiness is not happiness” then he noted that “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED” (189). After spending a solid four months by himself, Chris has realized that he was wrong on his view on freedom and feels lonely without anyone being there with him. This quote shows the reader that Chris knew he made a mistake in the first place but it was too late for him to try to go back to the social norm set by his family. When Chris graduates from college he is still young to decide on what he wants to do in life, in this case he makes the mistake of leaving the few people who loved him and this issue leads to several consequences throughout his adventure the main one being his death. The Instinct Chris has for materialism is strong and he feels that he can live a better life without money and other objects. A main reason on why money would have helped Chris was the fact that money would have given him the opportunity to buy more tools for his upcoming experience in the Alaskan wildlife. In this Article the Football players says that he “can’t let passion overrule [his] sense”. Despite the money this player would have made, he made the decision to leave it all.
