When reacting to the way people act and what they might say to us, we have to be cautious and make sure to give them the benefit of the doubt and make ourselves vulnerable. To make ourselves vulnerable we must realize that we are not in control of everything that goes on. If one acts as if the actions of a person are odd or completely out of the ordinary they are thinking close-mindedly, they are not taking in to account that the person more than likely can justify their actions and have a valid reason for what they did. In Chimamanda Adichie’s speech, “The danger of a single story,” she says, “The consequence of a single story is this: It robs people of dignity” (Adichie). When Adichie says this she means that when we look at someone and create a stereotype or we create this “single story” for someone else, we deprive them of who the person really is and what they could be. We do not know exactly what may be going on with someone so we must remain open-minded at all times and give everyone a generous story. Our society wants everyone to come together and actually get along; being open-minded towards everything and everyone is two of the best ways to do so.
