On October 25th, 2016, a venue named 506 Local on Franklin St, Chapel Hill, held a show featuring three punk rock artist. The opening act, Chastity, is a hardcore punk band created in 2015, hailing from Canada. The next set was performed by an all-female punk band formed in 2014, Cayetana, which is rather unique for the genre. Lastly, the headline band performed: a band named PUP, created in 2013 and also from Canada. The entirety of the show emitted a sense of community, openness, diversity, and inclusion. Performers and audience members alike manifested the spirit of human kindness through their actions and words. From the moment I entered the venue, I was almost certain I was going to enjoy the night. People slowly crowded to the front …show more content…
The guitarist, who was also the lead singer, employed a pedalboard. However, the drummer and bassist seemed to use no extra effects. The audience was significantly more energetic, singing along to the songs and banging their heads to the music. This was my first time hearing Cayetana, let alone a female punk group. To say the least, I was blown away by the quality of their music and their stage presence. Like Chastity, they talked to the audience between songs and made comments about equality, diversity, and acceptance. Both the singer and the bassist would stand close to each other, and the singer even kissed the bassist’s …show more content…
Immediately, the crowd’s vitality strengthened greatly. Both the lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist (who is also the lead vocalist) used a pedalboard, but once again the bassist and drummer had no added effects. While the band was not playing music, they talked with the crowd and promoted social equality and justice. Each song was accompanied by an abundance of vigorous moshing and crowd surfing. Audience members climbed on to the barrier and jumped off backward to be caught and held up by their energetic comrades. While the act of moshing itself is rather violent, the community was caring about each other while doing it. If someone fell, they would be helped up. If someone was getting too rough, someone would calmly let them know to be more gentle. There was a group of people standing to the side against the wall to avoid the moshing, but they were still being bumped into. To solve this, myself and two other guys stood between those who were moshing and those standing at the wall.
During the process of being a human barrier, my leg was slightly injured and I was left walking with a limp. While I was walking to my dorm, one of the people I met at the concert saw me limping and offered me a ride to my dorm, and I took him up on the offer. To most people, offering a ride to a person who is limping is seen as an act of decency. However, I view his kind deed as a symbolic representation of the

Even though it was difficult to understand the words of the vocalist, it was still noticeable that the words went along the rhythm of the song and the melody. After the lyrical section of the song, the electric guitar had a solo which had a riff at a medium tempo; the solo seemed to have only been a written solo, since the musician appeared to be reading it from the music sheet. After the guitarist solo, there was a horn solo which involved tonality of high pitch notes. The whole band then played a consonant harmony that had the same syncopation as the introduction. Then the vocalist sang, while the guy in the keyboards played a chord.…

I saw Buffalo 40 perform at the DC9, a night club in northwest DC. Buffalo 40 is a rock band that was created in 2013 that combines many musical elements such as “rock funk blues metal and modern rock”(ReverbNation). These fusional musical elements of their performance highlighted their country music and rock musical identities as well as their attire, lyrics, gender identity socioeconomics and race. During the performance of clothing but one exception was one band member was wearing a top hat with green cloth attached to it. Each band member had a black shirt and a pair of jeans on rock musicians usually wear items that are similar to other band members.…

Very few famous performers nowadays can integrate showmanship with their music. In the 70’s a musical group by the name of Parliament took the music world by storm with their out of this world appearance and their own rendition of Funk music. Parliament was one of the key pieces in the development of funk music and modern music as well. They created what we know as P-Funk today that was a key element of the foundation of Hip-Hop. For my concert report I analyzed Parliament’s 1976…

When they were first introduced the leader of the UCCS vocals said this was their first Collab with the Chamber Ensemble. The band began with “Graduale in nativitatem domini od missom,” a combination of opera and classical music and this was from both VAPA Vocal and Chamber Ensemble. When they were playing and singing at the same time it made it hard to count the bars. At first, I thought the rhythm was changing into a mixture of classical music and cool jazz but after reading the book I realize it can’t be cool jazz it sounded more like classical alone. There were three musicians taking turns.…

On March 26th, I attended a concert at Sidewinder in Austin, Texas. The venue hosted three bands: The Sweethearts, Two Tens, and The Dollyrots. All three were female-fronted punk rock bands, but The Sweethearts were the only band that was local. The other two were on tour with each other. It was nice to see the techniques we learned in class used in a live performance. When the person playing the timpani was playing constant quarter notes, her stroke was almost identical for every note. It was hard to see the rolls happening on the snare drum, but I noticed that the technique is similar for bass drum. When rolling a decrescendo, he moved from the center of the drum out and the rolls became slower as he got closer to the rim. I also thought it was interesting that he used traditional grip when rolling on the bass drum.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

I have always loved listening to different kinds of music, from country, to pop, and even classical. Before this concert, however, I had never seen a Jazz concert performed by other musicians. In approximately the 6th grade, however, I preformed a blues piece in the exact room the Introduction to jazz class takes place. This had been my foundation for Jazz up until this point in time. One could say that I had no experience when it came to the concepts of Jazz in its entirety.…

When envisioning an oversized teddy bear, an old fashioned alphabet building block set, and a jack-in-the-box that is emanating a soothing tune, one might think they are in a child’s playroom. Unexpectedly, however, these things were found during a concert; a Melanie Martinez concert. Melanie’s style and general theme of her concerts can more than often be described as possessing a whimsical, carnival, feel due to her usage of circus props, such as a carousel, and distinct carnival pop tunes. This, along with her innocent yet powerful voice, has piqued the interest of many alternative music listeners. I am no exception.…

Futurity I was shocked for a moment after I watched the show Futurity because I didn’t expect it as a musical show. My classmates who sat next me were also confused. In order to understand what the show is about, I found a brief summary from their website: “Two people try to imagine their way out of impossible circumstances in FUTURITY – an avant-Americana musical by indie band The Lisps. Julian is a Civil War soldier dreaming of a technological utopia.…
