Analysis Of Charlis And I

Charlis and I set in the backdrop of Kerala tells the story of untouchability that existed during that time in Kerala. It is a time when the practice of untouchability in Kerala is at its peak. It is very rigid and followed very strictly. The story begins with a game of football among Neil, his friends and cousins. While they were playing Neil comes to meet a young boy named Charlis who begins to play with them. As the story proceeds we can see that how Charlis have been ignored and treated in a different way by the society just for the fact that he is an untouchable. But we can find that the deep rooted custom of untouchability started fading away with the passage of time. The other literary devices that were used includes simile and imageries. A simile is basically a contrasting to seemingly unalike things to enhance the meaning of a situation or theme using like or as. In this story Charlis and I the phrase “It soared up like a startled bird” is a perfect example for a simile. Here the author is comparing the kick of the ball with that of a startled bird soaring up high in the sky. The other simile is “rhythms that sang in his blood like the whisper of his mother’s breathe. This story is filled with lot of imageries which gives more life to the story. An imagery is something the author attempts to give a mental picture or reference point in the mind of the reader. It can be visual, strong and effective imagery that can be used to invoke an emotional, sensational or even a physical response. Here we can see the description of halva and dosa which is able to create a visual effect in the mind of the readers. The symbolism in this story is the growing bond between Neil and Charlis belonging to two different classes. It tells about how their relationship is not hampered by the social stigma present in the society. All together this is the perfect example of a well plotted
