Analysis Of Centerpoint Energy's Proposal

The Supreme Court noted that IPL did not enjoy “complete dominion over the deposits” compared to other advance payment cases. IPL had an obligation to repay the deposits once the customers achieved good credit or terminated their service. More importantly, IPL did not require a minimum purchase once a customer paid such deposit. IPL also considered the deposits as a loan and paid back the refunds along with interest if funds were held longer for 6 months. With these facts, the Supreme Court ruled the deposits that IPL received when customers opened new accounts were not advance payments and should not be taxable to IPL when received.

While comparing the IPL case to CenterPoint Energy’s proposal, there are key factual differences that are critical

Klein wrote how profit earned from the sale of energy would be returned to the city instead of shareholders. In the last week of February, a historical event took place here in the U.S. when a tanker left the coast of Louisiana carrying America’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) export to Brazil. Symbolically, the tanker marked a new era of energy production and trade and was a sign of the U.S.’s new position as an independent player in the Energy Sector. In many ways, this milestone was made possible by the decade-old shale boom that was pioneered and propelled by the energy visionary, Mr. Aubrey McClendon. Mr. McClendon died on March 2nd in a one-man car crash in Oklahoma City at 56 years old. McClendon was undoubtedly a pioneer in the U.S. energy industry and a brash risk-taker.…

My organization’s values are in a transition period as our industry changes on a broad scale, and as we go through a management change. In general, a similar group of basic assumptions has been at the core of the power industry for a long time (Bassham, 2016). These basic assumptions typically align with the view that our customers are only ratepayers, and our only obligation to them is to keep their lights on. Our new management has, along with a growing percentage of the industry, began to focus on values that view our customers as partners, and we have an obligation to listen to them and deliver what they want. But, as Kreitner and Kinicki (2013) discuss in the text because these basic assumptions are so ingrained and deep-rooted, they are very difficult to…
