Hemingway has used different elements in order to describe the story, without pointing out every detail in order for the reader to understand it. Hemingway has used decadence, reversed or undefined gender roles, as well as idealized past. Through “Cat In The Rain”, there are a couple of points of decadence used to set self-indulgence throughout his writing. Hemingway did a great job with setting a good amount of it in this short story. “I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth…”, this is an example of decadence, she clearly wants something. Here, Hemingway is simply having the woman talk about wanting a kitty, but the connotation here is that the kitty in this story represents a baby. Hemingway could have easily had her say straight to the point that she wants a child, but he was able to give the implication without having it said through the woman 's dialogue. Lost Generation writers, such as Hemingway, seem to be appreciable with getting their point across. “I wanted it so much, I don’t know why I wanted it so much…”, another example of decadence is shown here. She says she wants it, and this is being self-indulgent. While these two quotes emphasize decadence, most of the short story seems to give off a vibe of the element. While some thought Hemingway was a resplendent writer, others felt more that he was lacking in some dominant features. One piece that stuck out to numerous readers was the short story, “Hills Like White Elephants”. Multiple people have shared their own opinions on his work. Whether they were positive or negative feedback, it most of the time went down to their own position on his approach to writing. It was great the way Hemingway gave off the main idea. A couple is discussing about an abortion, while Hemingway does not clearly state that throughout this scene (Danes). Similar to “Cat In The Rain”, Hemingway was able to use his strategy of discarding a straight to the point insight and still give off the details of the passage. Claire Danes, a critic that shared her own thoughts on this story, admired his ability to employ his way of work. One lesson to take away from this is that, not everyone will appreciate the art of the work that was put in, but respect will be given due to the ideas that were thought of. Although positive criticism is what people adapt to being interested in more, once in awhile that positivity can also be constructive in a way.
