Response to Question 1 In the pictorial, Miss Colombia’s School House (1894), shows the male figure representing Hawaii and the female figure representing Canada being excluded from the United States. It seems that the male figure representing Hawaii is disappointed that he is not allowed in, but the female figure representing Canada seems to look like she does not mind not being allowed in. I believe that the perceptions of the south are also included in the pictorial. An example of this would be the fact that the African American child appears to be holding a weapon.…

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

The conquest of the Americas during the 15th and 16th centuries, as documented by Christopher Columbus and Bartoleme de Las Casas, was tale of hammer and nail. In both accounts the Natives were described as meek and docile, with little to no weaponry that could withstand Spanish attack. Both Columbus and Las Casas stated that the Indians were naive, lacking evil, and respectful, Las Casas even stating they were “weak and complacent”. In the eyes of these Spanish explorers, the Indians were malleable people, and would benefit from conversion to the Christian faith. Las Casas differs from Columbus, however, in his view of the Spaniards.…

Both N. Scott Momaday and Bartolome De la Casas respected the Natives’ culture; however, John Smith and Christopher Columbus viewed themselves superior to the ‘ignorant’ Natives. To start, Momaday and De la Casas appreciate the Native’s unique history and culture. Momaday illustrates his admiration for his family tribe the Kiowas for maintaining their culture despite the struggles and European influence in “The Rainy Mountain”. For instance, even though his grandmother became “a Christian in her later years… she never forgot her birthright”(np). Her memories of her culture of the Sun Dance and her language is still vivid to her, which then is passed to Momaday as stories to share.…

A rhetorical analysis “breaks a work of nonfiction into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect—whether to persuade, entertain or inform ” (“Rhetorical Analysis”). There are in fact many stakeholder organizations that implement this technique to effectively convey their argument through the use of several rhetorical appeals such as ethos, pathos, logos and kairos. Stakeholders are organizations or individuals who have a stake in or “care about any given issue, topic, or event” (Browning 45). One such organization is the Polaris Project which is “a leader in the global fight to eradicate modern slavery” (Bouchard).…

Not only is she holding a cigarette in one hand, but she is pushing a stroller with the other. This immediately portrays the young girl as a mother, and evokes emotions from the audience such as concern for her and her child. These particular emotions are illustrated through the body language of the children, their positioning in the photograph, and the presence of the two dolls and cigarette. The older girl, who is pushing the stroller, is facing the camera with a very crude expression on her face. Her face is contracted with a very knit brow line, and her body is slouched with all of her weight on her left leg.…

Introduction This advertisement was part of a print campaign “Creativity Forgives Everything” created by an advertising agency for LEGO; the title of this advert is “Fridge” and it was released in February 2014. LEGO is an internationally-known toy manufacturing company that addresses a range of cultural target groups, but more specifically for a western audience; owing to this, the text of the advertisement is in English. From the language choice and words chosen for the advert’s slogan, it can be inferred that it was targeted at a more educated audience belonging to or above the middle-class as they can afford to buy Lego’s products, specifically parents. It is possible that the advert appeared in a number of magazines sold in both western…
