The second passage I chose was not about Yossarian’s character, though it may deal with how frustrated he finds his new roomates, but about the glamorization of war. “They were the most depressing group of people Yossarian had ever been with. They were always in high spirits. They laughed at everything. They called him ‘Yo-Yo’ jocularly and came in tipsy late at night and woke him up with their clumsy, bumping, giggling efforts to be quiet, then bombarded him with asinine shouts of hilarious good-fellowship when he sat up cursing to complain.…
During wars, everyone is but a chess piece, a pawn ready to sacrifice itself for the greater good. As a result, people lose their humanity, becoming one of five million bodies. In World War I especially, lieutenants and generals often expended many soldiers, hoping to receive glory or recognition for their actions, without thinking about the loss of personality and unique traits. Although technologies had advanced, these generals still fought wars in a medieval way. However, following World War I, citizens realized the magnitude of death and began to question the old ways.…
I chose to write the diary from the perspective of Lieutenant Jabati because he is a character that gets little development or background in the story; I thought that explaining his perspective would add a new level of understanding to the book for interested readers.…

Tim O’Brien tells about the horrible things that happen during the war and how it affects the soldiers. An interesting person on this book is Jimmy Cross. When he was in college he signed up to go to military training because it gave him credits and his friends were also signing up. Once he goes to war he becomes a lieutenant, but he is inexperienced and ill-equipped. He is proud to be known as a leader, but he is not comfortable being responsible for his men’s lives.…
During this part, we see that throughout the story we get more and more insight into characters one part at a time. Even though soldiers constantly have problems Doc Daneeka ignores them, and catch 22 is also used as an excuse to be able to raise the mission count without any problems. Furthermore, one soldier, Milo, is all about having an assortment of foods, to do this during war time he sells things on the black market, but the only way to scale it is to get the whole government involved with his very complex plan. Yossarian also learns that if he does favors for people they can give him things that only they have access to. Additionally, Heller uses Major Major Major’s promotion to show how comedic gains can outweigh any rational decision, and because of his promotion he is…
This novel was an honorable effort by Richard Holmes in discovering the essential issues persuading the nature of man's behavior on and off the battle field. This writing is well-researched and recognized logical studies of the soldier's feelings and behavior during their basic training, his experience in battle, and its aftermath (p.30). The study is well covered: during battle, he argues the factors that encourage soldiers to keep them going in the face of weakness, fear and death. Further than the battlefield, he deals with the influence of religion and background, the significance of personal leadership and inner self influences soldiers to continue fighting in the heat of battle.…

How Deceptive Communication Leads to Corruption in Catch-22 Because humans are naturally social creatures, we must communicate information to others in order to maintain a functioning and prosperous society. As human civilization advanced, our communication methods also evolved, from basic primal actions and sounds to whole sets of languages that allow people to express increasingly complex ideas. Our reliance on the information that we exchange with others makes honest and trustworthy communication also a necessary component to a proper society. When this honesty is lost and deceptive messages are sent out, thoughts are misinterpreted and catastrophes can occur. Trustworthy communication is especially important for authoritative figures such…
Heller’s most important theme is of twisted bureaucratic power and loss of justice, and Yossarian portrays this powerfully through his rebellion towards the system. Without Yossarian, the most essential theme of Heller’s novel would not be nearly as prominent. Through the novel, there are many instances of predetermined rules conquering logical observation. Yossarian is in a position that emphasizes the unfair power of preset rules. Doc is recorded as killed in a plane crash, even as he stands next to his men, alive.…
To get a better understanding of today’s racial inequality, people may want to look at the past, reaching as far back as 1500 and 1600. This issue did not happen overnight but instead, evolved from the early settling of the Europeans. Firsthand accounts from times of exploration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries suggest that rapidly expanding colonization played a key role (large or small, differing from one perspective to another) in people’s stereotypical ideas of skin color and race. Documents from the explorer Prince Henry “the Navigator” give us not just evidence of European stereotypes of other races, but also stereotypes towards Europeans from another race’s point of view. Bartolomé de la Casas’ accounts do suggest that while…
The book A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier is the memoir of Joseph Plumb Martin and chronicles his thoughts and experiences as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. His diary was originally published as A Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers and Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier, Interspersed with Anecdotes of Incidents that Occurred Within His Own Observation, and later it was better known as Private Yankee Doodle. The book portrays Revolutionary War battles of historical significance and illustrates the difficulties faced by the soldiers who fought in the war. In 1760, Joseph Plumb Martin was born in western Massachusetts.…
This chapter contrasts greatly with the harsh war-time reality as it describes in vague terms those detached from the war making the decision to go to war. For the rest of the book however, the structure is chronological and follows the squad through this certain period of the…
Imagine what it would be like to live during a world war, and the internal and external conflicts one must face because of it. In the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles, The boys at the Devon school deal with war in their everyday lives. Both of the characters Leper and Finny are forced to face the reality of world war II in different ways. Leper and Finny’s experiences with war impact each significantly, although both result in a major loss of innocence. Leper’s naivety about what it would be like to enlist was the beginning of his downfall.…
This book is split into many different stories from many different men all around Vietnam. One story and characters that really caught my attention was a man by the name of Lieutenant Howard. This story stuck out to me because of the leadership that this character demonstrated. Howard was a religious man and also a strong leader. He was in charge of a group at Landing Zone X ray.…
