Evidence: Calpurnia is Atticus’s black house maid and is a mother figure to Scout and Jem. Atticus treats her with a lot of respect which was very rare in the 30s. A major factor in Calpurnia’s life is that she is very educated. Where she lives, most black people don’t know how to read, she and her son Zeebo are one of the only people who know how to read. When Scout and Jem went to Calpurnia’s church, Cal started talking differently around her friends. She talked like the rest of the blacks, which sounded uneducated.
