In these chapters I will be characterizing Atticus. Atticus seems to be hoary or old. Atticus is the best checker player in town. This illustrates that Jem and Scout are not impressed with their father because he does not do things that they are interested in. He cannot do most of the activities with them. Even though Jem and Scout love their father, they think that he does not do the same things as the other fathers. This shows that he is older aged and does not mess around or play with the kids. First, I will question Calpurnia. According to Atticus “If anything, she’s been harder on them in some ways than a mother would have been”(Lee 183). This shows that Atticus thinks Calpurnia is a good influence on the children and they should listen to her. He also thinks that she has high standards for the kids to achieve just like him. When Jem burst to tears he ran right to Calpurnia. This symbolizes how he thinks of Calpurnia as a motherly figure instead of Aunt Alexandra. Calpurnia got the kids dressed and went to church with them. This expresses that she thinks of them as her kids. It also indicates that she cares enough for the kids to get them all dressed and ready for church to go with her. Next, I will explain why the kids do not think of Aunt Alexandra as a mother. According to Scout “Aunty had a way of declaring What Is Best For The Family, and I suppose her coming to live with us was in that category” (Lee 171). This quote can explain how Scout and Jem do not think that Aunt Alexandra moving in with them is a good idea. This may also show that Jem and Scout think that Aunt Alexandra is a person that would support or help them.. Jem and Scout thought that Alexandra fit into Maycomb but did not fit in with them. This can symbolize how Jem and Scout think Calpurnia is a better mother than Aunt Alexandra. It also shows how much Calpurnia means to them. The kids never see
