Analysis Of C. S. Lewis 'Learning In War Time'

As Christians one must always remain centered on God and keep that as the pinnacle of importance. So then, is time wasted studying for a test when it could be used to further God’s kingdom? What about trivial hobbies like going for a run on a brisk day, is that meaningless? Certainly exercise can bring happiness and is endorsed by our society as good, but in the end what will be the point of small temporary happiness when our eternal destiny is on the line? Often the thought has occurred that any time not spent directly furthering God’s kingdom is time ill spent, but that is faulty thinking. One should work to bring God into every aspect of life instead of limiting oneself to only participate in activities where one expects to find God. In C.S. Lewis’s paper, Learning in War Time, he explains the necessity of continuing education through a time of war. His writing primarily addressed learning at any time because there will never be a good time to pursue academics, strife in the world will ever be present. Lewis went on to say that no one can live fully devoted to war because it is necessary to perform normal life activities. In addition surrendering oneself to any single cause would be dishonorable to God. C.S. Lewis’s piece dramatically influenced me and …show more content…
Several times when asked about my future vocation I have said business with the following question of, is it nondenominational? After saying no I hear that that is okay because we need people to support missionaries and churches. This is true in some aspects as I hope to be able to contribute monetarily, however I think a major point is missed in this. Becoming a secular businessman is not a lower calling than becoming a missionary. All Christians have been called to bring glory to God through all of their vocations, all of their actions. There is not a lesser career if we have all been asked to accomplish the same task, to bring

If Descartes ever believed something he was uncertain about he would have made no progress on his journey. “I realized that it was necessary, once in the course of my life, to demolish everything completely and start again right from the foundations if I wanted to establish anything at all in the sciences that was stable and likely to last” (First Meditation, pg. 12). His opinions and thought made Descartes unique. He is always in a meditation, he is always emptying his mind of opinions because he fears his opinions will get in the way of what is truth and is not.…

One needs to put their trust in him and quit worrying and continually keep their eyes set on today rather than what is to come. “Jesus is not saying that his followers may be as careless as the birds and the flowers, doing no work and simply looking to out Father to provide everything…But there is all the difference in the world between doing this in anxiety and fear and doing it in trust in a loving Father” “Jesus’ disciples must live lives qualitatively different from those of people who have no trust in God’s fatherly care and no fundamental goals beyond material things” (32): We are not unbelievers so we need to stop acting are as we are. If one worries they are not putting their trust in the Lord but in themselves, we must strive to be different in every way we approach life comparing between believers and unbelievers of Christ. (33): Based on this verse from Scripture, Longman and Garland seem to explain it best, “…makes it clear that Jesus’ disciples are not simply to refrain from the pursuit of temporal things as their primary goal in order to differentiate themselves from pagans; instead they are to replace such pursuits with goals of far greater…

The Nature of God and Missions The Nature of God and Missions can be seen throughout the Old and New Testament scriptures. God’s mission is directly related to His own nature. According to 1 John 4:8, God is love and he works through his people to fulfil his purpose. “The central idea here is that God is the one who initiates and sustains mission. This term refutes the traditional idea that mission is the centered on the church and to express that mission actually is centered on God.” Individuals that have been sent into the world to proclaim the gospel, must take specific action by sharing the gospel and persuading all the people of the world to become Jesus’s disciples.…

Furthermore, the religious community should learn to embrace the possibilities that science holds, because it, like religion, preaches hope for a better tomorrow. Berry mentions Paul’s letter to the Romans on his definition of hope when he says, “For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it” (24). The ability to compromise and make concessions with conflicting viewpoints should be easy, because we all live hoping for a better tomorrow. Neither religion nor science can be concrete in their assertions of how life was created and came to be, but both ideologies can come together in an effort to build hope for a better…
