In his book Building A Character, Constantin Stanislavski gives actors the techniques needed for creating a role. He writes that a fully realized character is born through studying, establishing the life of the role, and transforming the role into physical form. He writes on three main periods: the first being preparation, the second period is the period of emotional experience, and the third period is the embodiment of the role. He compares these periods to relationships and growth that occurs in the normal lives of human beings. He says that the first time an actor reads a script will affect how the actor proceeds with his work, in that, the actor is always attached by the effect of the first impression (Stanislavsky 3). I agree with his statement because I have experienced this in my acting. In the process of practicing the scenes, I always find it difficult to portray the characters in a way that is different from my first impression of them. This continues to happen to me even after hearing critiques from my acting professor on different facets of the character is. However, the actor must always remain true to himself (Stanislavski 85-86). Stanislavski also mentioned that the actor will always remain true to himself in Building a Character. By repeating this technique in his third book, he creates emphasis on this and wants actors to know that they should never pretend to be the character, but rather they should bring the character to life by being true to who they are. I agree with this because when actors pretend to be the characters, they often end up doing poor jobs because the duplicate can never be as good as the original. For the performance to be good, it has to be
