Overall being on the show pushed him into coming out about it him being transgender and to follow through with what he started back in the 1970’s. To Bruce Jenner, he wasn’t comfortable with who he was and the body he was in. He was jealous of other men feeling comfortable in their own skin, and also other women being able to express themselves in how they dress. He wanted to be able to express how he really felt by being a woman, but he could not accomplish that in a man’s body. Bruce began more procedures and treatment in pursing his transformation into a woman. The procedures that Bruce went through were multiple face surgeries that involves “changes to the hairline, forehead, jaw and chin, and the day’s surgeries took a total of 10 hours”(Johnson, Susan) Bruce also went through a breast augmentation along with a tracheal shave. The last step for Bruce would be the switching his male genitals over to female, but that step is not required to be a transgender. To Bruce he was always interested in females and never once been with a man so he considered himself straight. Then the question came up, that although he considers himself straight since he is into females, is he really straight if he thinks he should be a woman but he has male parts? Bruce says that with gender identity it matters who you are as a person and how you feel about a person inside. The main reason Bruce wanted to keep his gender identity issues a secret, was because he did not want to disappoint anyone. He was also nervous about how society might react in a negative way. His goal in coming out was to encourage other people suffering from gender identity, that it is okay. Bruce wanted to make a difference in the world to show that trans-genders don’t have to be afraid.
