There are three different styles of parenting which are authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive. In my professional opinion the authoritative parenting style is the most beneficial and affective type. Authoritative parents encourage their children to be independent while setting boundaries. This type of parenting disciplines in a supportive warm way that may provide feedback instead of punishment. (Riggio Ph.D., 2014) Since authoritative parents encourage independence children have a higher leadership potential. You being an adoptive parent need to pay special attention to this topic since there is a large chance that your child’s culture will differ from your own. Learning about your child’s culture will help build her self-concept and allow you to teach her that love and acceptance of all cultures is important. One way to accomplish this is to teach your child words in their native language; these can be simple phrases such as, “I love you” or “Thank you.” (Corbin, n.d.) It will also be important to supply your daughter with books, toys, and displays of their culture in your house. It is also great to include other cultures as well, encourage friendships with those outside their culture as well. Eating foods from different cultures is a great way to teach and something that we all enjoy
