What the teacher’s failed to do was see the importance of diversity in the classroom. Brad Cohen was different among his peers, and it needed to be acknowledged in an encouraging manner. It should not have taken Brad attending a school concert for the student’s to understand and accept him. A popular strategy that could have been done in the classroom would be role-playing. With this strategy, each student would have the chance to switch places with one another. This could be done at the beginning of the semester. Switching roles would allow each student to evaluate each other’s differences. Cooperative work would be another ideal strategy for it would show each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Dissatisfaction due to stereotyping, or assuming a certain behavior from a certain group of students seems relevant in today’s society. This bias attitude can discourage students to learn; causing a huge hurdle to overcome. As illustrated in the lecture, great examples of challenges concerning diversity are family and world views. How does a teacher keep a student involved if there is no further education in her future due to family views? Beliefs can be a devastating setback for any instructor trying to address any lesson. With challenges, there are also many advantages that diversity brings to the classroom. Students have the ability to learn and interact with different cultures; teachers may develop innovative training methods to suite the entire classroom. The greatest gift a classroom could receive is not new supplies, but a diverse student body. It could become the best tool available for the teacher.
